It’s been three long years since the last Rotary powered Mazda RX-8 rolled off the assembly line, but the dream of a Rotary powered sports car is back. Mazda went ahead and pulled the covers off its RX-VISION concept at the beginning of the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show and it’s as every bit as good as we hoped for. With a long sleek body with clear RWD proportions all underneath the banner of KODO design-based proportions, the RX-VISION represents what Mazda hopes to bring into production in the near feature.
RX-VISION represents a vision of the future that Mazda hopes to one day make into reality; a front-engine, rear-wheel drive sports car with exquisite, KODO design-based proportions only Mazda could envision, and powered by the next-generation SKYACTIV-R rotary engine.
The new engine they’ve worked on is called SKYACTIV-R and as far as we know, Mazda has released not a single bit of information on how much power it makes or what kind of fuel mileage we can expect. But rest assured, this is a bold step in the right direction as Mazda has clearly put its best foot forward and committed itself to the project.
For any inspiration on how it will drive, you can look to the newly released MX-5 for hints. Driving pleasure will be emphasized, a keen attention to detail to making sure the driver is at the center of the experience and enough power and fuel efficiency to compete against the likes of the Ford Mustang, Nissan 370Z, Porsche Boxster and Alfa Romeo 4C will be the RX-VISION Concept’s saving credentials.
No word on production dates as supposedly Mazda doesn’t want to stress out its engineers. The rumor mills will be running 24/7 so wether Mazda likes it or not, lots of hype will be piled on to this RX-8 successor.
