Mazda reveals teaser pic of sporty coupe concept ahead of Tokyo show, it could receive rotary power and succeed the RX8
Mazda will be going in all-guns blazing at the Tokyo Motor Show next month, showcasing a sleek new sports coupe concept on the 28th of October. Details of the new model are scarce so far, but the firm has dropped some big hints about it.
All we have to go on so far is this subtle teaser image. It shows a rearward-cab designed two door with a long bonnet and sloping roofline, with a similar profile to the Jaguar F-Type. Mazda claims it “strove to condense the company’s sports car history to as great a degree as possible”.
Rumours are already rife about what will be powering the new sports car, with powertrain engineer Florian Callies telling us in 2014 there’s “still enthusiam for rotary tech at Mazda”. The biggest hint the firm has dropped is that, alongside the new concept, we will see a 1967 Mazda Cosmo Sport 110S – the company’s first rotary powered mass-production car- at Tokyo.
The last time we saw a rotary engine in a Mazda was the RX-8 four-door coupe, dropped from the line-up in 2012. It’s not clear whether this new concept will directly replace the RX-8, but telling signs are that this will be the Japanese firm’s new ‘halo’ sports car in the next couple of years.
We’ll find out more details, and see the concept in all its glory, at the 2015 Tokyo show.
